Internal Norms and Regulations

Academic rules are based on approved by UFPR resolutions and internal regulations approved by the Academic Board, including norms to elaborate thesis and dissertation, guidelines for defenses as well as for financial support to conferences are available after request at Postgraduate Program Office.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE DEGREES

The Master of Science degree requires at least 18 credits in courses with a grade-point average of at least 80 point in a 100 scale. Under normal circumstances a Master’s degree cannot take more than two years without a petition approved by the Academic Board. The candidate has to provide a draft copy of his or her completed dissertation to the members of the examining committee approved by the Academic Board at least 30 days  before the dissertation defense deadline. The date of the dissertation defense and the composition of the examining committee will not be approved by the Academic Board until the dissertation is submitted in completed form, i.e., ready for review by the members of the approved examining committee.

The master´s degree requirements also include the language proficiency in English and submission of a scientific work in a journal (ranked in Web-of-Science) or a patent (registred in a industrial property office) concerning the dissertation.

Under normal circumstances a Doctorate degree cannot take more than four years without a petition approved by the Academic Board. The work consists of an original research and the preparation of a thesis describing it, and of systematic studies of an advanced character in material science or engineering. The candidate has to provide a draft copy of his or her completed thesis to the members of the examining committee at least  … months before the thesis defense deadline. The date of the defense and the composition of the examining committee will not be approved by the Academic Board until the thesis is submitted in completed form, i.e., ready for review by the members of the approved examining committee.

For doctorate degree, the requirements to be fulfilled also include a second language proficiency other than English, publication of a scientific work in a journal (ranked in QUALIS CAPES or Web-of-Science) or a patent (registered in a industrial property office) concerning the thesis, as well as, submission of a second scientific work in ranked journal or patent concerning the thesis theme.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS

In order to continue to pursue a degree and to receive financial aid, as scholarship, at PIPE, graduate students must maintain satisfactory academic progress toward completion of their Master or Doctor degree. Continuity of registration must be observed until all degree requirements are fulfilled, except if it is authorized by PIPE’s Academic Board.

The Graduate Office checks the academic progress each semester. The academic progress is judged by internal regulations, and a student registration may be withdrawn by formal action if its academic progress is not satisfactory, or for other compelling reasons. A decision to revoke or withdrawn permission to register may be appealed to the Academic Board.
